Kawailoa Wind
The Kawailoa Wind project is the second wind energy facility to be built on the island of Oahu, Hawaii. The project is located on Kamehameha Schools’ Kawailoa Plantation lands, about 5 miles northeast of Haleiwa on the north shore. The Project is a part of Kamehameha Schools’ North Shore Plan and was developed with extensive input from the local community. The wind farm consists of 30 Siemens 2.3 MW wind turbines and is the first project in the United States utilizing Siemens turbines on 95 meter towers. The project team was constantly challenged by the area’s high winds and heavy rain, limited delivery times for materials as well as valley terrain that required
helicopters to string the transmission lines.
